Klais organ at Voxman

1. The number of city blocks that rest between the front door of the University of Iowa’s new Voxman Music Buiding – the home of the UI School of Music – and the center of the UI campus and Downtown Iowa City.

“The location of the new Voxman Music Building physically provides the UI School of Music a remarkable opportunity to make significant contributions to the cultural tapestry that makes Iowa City such a great place to live and work. Our location, just one city block away from the Pentacrest and our vibrant downtown district, is simply ideal,” said David Geir, director of the UI School of Music.

There are 700 seats in the new concert hall.

The Rita Benton Music Library offers more than 90,000 scores, 60,000 books, 3,500 microforms, and 44,000 media items in all formats.

The Arthur and Miriam Canter Rare Book Room holds over 3,000 rare books and scores, and has particular strengths in 18th and 19th century music theory treatises and instrumental methods, and an outstanding collection of keyboard and chamber music of Ignaz Pleyel.

More than 1 million square feet of drywall was used to accomplish the “box within a box” construction that creates separate, specialized, acoustic spaces.

188 acoustically-tuned panes are attached to the ceiling of the new large rehearsal space.

More than 2,000 students who are not majoring in music typically enroll in a music course each year, enriching their lives and their education by engaging with music.
