“My Iowa Story” is a collection of life-altering moments told by members of the University of Iowa community.  The storytellers will share a moment in their life when they learned something about themselves -- and each of these moments were influenced in one way or another by the University of Iowa.

The "My Iowa Story" series is one of the special events being planned for the week that culminates with the celebration of the installation of the 21st president of the UI: the "Week of Inspiration."  The storytelling sessions are scheduled from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday (Sept. 12-15).  The installation program is scheduled for 3 p.m., Friday (Sept. 16) at Hancher Auditorium.  The event is free and open to the public.

Host Peter Aguero of National Public Radio’s “The Moth” will lead each evening of storytelling in the "My Iowa Story" serires. “The Moth” celebrates the ability of stories to honor both the diversity and commonality of human experience, and to satisfy a vital human need for connection. “My Iowa Story” aims to do the same within the context of the University of Iowa.

Guests of “My Iowa Story” sessions will hear narrative of a wide array of personal experiences:  An athlete is able to overcome severe anxiety and doubt due to an out-of-the-blue intervention from a professor. A mother is able to cope with the death of her father by holding close to the words of a speech by a former University president. A doctor is able to have a deep effect on the survival of a family because they chose to be treated at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Each member of the University of Iowa community has his or her own story, and it connect us in a remarkable way. Inspired guests will be invited to share their Iowa story and become part of the “My Iowa Story” program.

Each evening will include a welcome reception with hors d’oeuvre and refreshments.
