My Iowa Story offers opportunities to share important life moments
Series of storytelling events part of UI’s Week of Inspiration
From a life-changing knock on a residence hall door to words from a beloved president coming at just the right time, the University of Iowa has been a formative character in the life stories of thousands of students, faculty, and family members.
My Iowa Story is an opportunity for storytellers from the UI community to share life-altering moments from their experience in Iowa City.
The My Iowa Story series is part the UI’s Week of Inspiration. The evening events, which will take place Sept. 12–15, are free and open to the public and will include a welcome reception with hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. Audience members are encouraged to share their own UI stories as well.
Peter Aguero, host of The Moth Radio Hour heard on public radio stations across the country, will lead each storytelling session. The Moth celebrates the way that stories can honor both the diversity and commonality of human experience and how they satisfy a vital human need for connection. My Iowa Story aims to do the same within the context of the UI.
Guests of My Iowa Story sessions will hear a wide array of personal experiences from six community members:
Christine Ralston: A speech from a beloved university figure gives a woman the strength to persevere in a difficult situation.
Ian Law: A doctor is able to use lessons he learned in Iowa City, along with some available facilities, to help a family through a crisis.
Okechukwu Ukah: An Iowa City resident discovers how he fits in the university community.
Bob Osterhaus: In 1950, the trajectory of a man's life changes after a chance knock on his door at Hillcrest Hall.
Lexie Finer: A student finds out that support is there when she really needs it as she makes her way through her education.
Nate Kaeding: An athlete at a crossroads is given an unexpected assist to help clear a path to future success.
